ARTH 313. Masterpieces of Italian Renaissance Art

A survey of Italian Renaissance painting and sculpture (1280-1550), including the works of Giotto, Donatello, Masaccio, Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Leonardo and Michelangelo. Weekly visits to the Uffizi, San Marco, the Accademia and other Florentine museums.

Satisfies General Education Cluster II: Visual and Performing Arts requirement. Taught in English.

HUM 200. Great Works [C2L]

An intensive examination of great literary works that focus on key issues of knowledge and reality, meaning and purpose, ethics, and aesthetics. Discussion, analysis and intensive writing are required. Texts will vary by section and instructor. May be used for General Education credit.

Satisfies General Education Cluster II: Literature requirement. Taught in English; Italian majors and minors may receive Italian credit by completing all written assignments in Italian.

An introduction to the fundamentals of wine making, wine tasting and glossary of terms provide a framework for visual, olfactory and gustative analysis. The historical value of wine, together with its cultural, economic and social meaning in Italy, are explored. Course taught in Florence, Italy. Lab fee applies. Prerequisite(s): Student must be enrolled in JMU in Florence Program.

HM 252. Culinary Arts and Menu Management

This course covers application of basic food preparation and menu development. The focus is on preparing students to understand gastronomy and communicate with culinary professionals. This course includes the development of effective menus, plate presentation, preparation methods, flavor development and food service trends. Lab fee applies. Uniform required. MKTG 380. Principles of Marketing

As a discipline that focuses on creating, communicating and delivering value for the consumer, marketing is essential for the success of both for-profit and nonprofit organizations and individual ideas. Students learn the key elements of marketing such as developing and distributing products, branding, pricing, and designing promotions. Students then use their understanding of the key concepts and tools to solve real-world marketing problems. Prerequisite(s): Junior standing.

Involves case studies of Italian firms and systematic comparisons between prevalent Italian/European and American marketing practices. Taught in English. There will be an additional fee, per COB differential tuition, of $150 billed to students who take this course.

POSC 371. Topics in Comparative Politics

In-depth exploration of specialized topics in the area of comparative politics. The topic for each semester will be announced on MyMadison.

How has a state as diverse as Italy managed to hold together for so long? Why do so many citizens continue to support the aging, libidinous and frequently embarrassing Silvio Berlusconi? Does the pope have any political influence in contemporary Italy? Why is Italian bureaucracy so inefficient? How do phenomena like corruption and patronage make it difficult to police the quality of olive oil, wine, gelato, leather and the many other products for which Italy is famous? Just how many times can Amanda Knox be tried in an Italian court of law? These are just a few of the questions that we’ll pursue. Satisfies General Education Cluster IV: Global Requirement. Taught in English.

This 1-credit course, in which all Semester in Florence students enroll, encourages critical engagement with the Florentine and broader Italian environments. Students reflect on the meaning of their study abroad experience and its relationship to their academic, professional and personal development.
