The Graduate Certificate in Literacy Education program is to prepare educators who want to serve in reading specialist roles in the public schools. Goals for candidates completing the certificate program include developing expertise in literacy instruction for all students across all domains of reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing; becoming experts at literacy assessment at the program, intervention and individual levels; and becoming leaders in professional development for teacher-colleagues and families. The certificate program is designed for experienced classroom teachers who already hold a master’s degree but still seek to add a reading specialist endorsement to their teaching license. The program is designed for completion on a part-time student basis. (Prior to receiving the reading specialist endorsement, candidates must have a minimum of three years of teaching experience. This certificate program provides the didactic coursework required for the endorsement; it does not include experiences that fulfill the requirement for years of teaching experience.)
