English Teaching Licensure

Licensure Requirements


Students interested in becoming secondary education English teachers (grades 6-12) must meet specific curriculum requirements in order to qualify for English teacher licensure. Many of these requirements may also count as part of the 36 credit hour English major requirements.

Required Courses: 6 Credit Hours

1 LED 254  will not fulfill any requirement in the English B.A. degree program.

2 ENG 235  and ENG 247  may not double count for the Required Literature Survey course and the Additional Literature Survey courses.

  • At least one course in American literature
  • At least one course in British literature
  • At least one course in World literature
  • At least one course in African American literature
  • At least one course in Gender and Sexuality
  • At least one course in pre-1700 literature
  • At least one course in pre-1900 literature

Some of these courses may fulfill more than one category in the English major requirements.

Additional Information


In addition to the General Education  and academic major requirements, English majors desiring secondary education English teacher licensure must choose one of the following pathways:

1. English major, secondary education (SEED) major, admission to COE teacher education program and completion of program requirements, and fulfillment of the English teacher licensure requirements; or

2. English major, secondary education (SEED) minor, admission to COE teacher education program and completion of program requirements, fulfillment of English teacher licensure requirements, and completion of the graduate level Master of Arts in Teaching degree.

It is critical that students seeking licensure consult regularly with both their education advisor and their major advisor to support their progression through the programs. For a full description of the program in secondary teaching, refer to the Department of Middle, Secondary and Mathematics Education , in addition to the College of Education .
