The sports communication minor provides students with a view into sports media and sports organization and offers them the chance to consider the varied stakeholders of sports and how sports intersect with many societal issues. Students gain hands-on experience in sports broadcasting, journalism, and public relations.
This minor consists of course work offered in communication studies, media arts and design, and kinesiology for students with an interest in sports media and communication.
Because of the curriculum sequence, it typically takes three to four consecutive semesters to complete the minor. Rising seniors typically cannot complete the minor by graduation. Some required courses are offered only one semester a year.
Any course taken to fulfill a degree requirement in sport communication minor must be completed with a minimum grade of “C-.” A sport communication course completed with a grade of “D” may be credited toward graduation but may not be included as course work toward the sport communication minor. Additionally, courses completed with a grade less than “C-” will not count as fulfilling prerequisites for future courses, and enrolled students may be administratively removed from courses for which they have not completed a required prerequisite with a minimum grade of “C-“.
This minor is open to any student at the university including SCOM majors.
