Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Minor

The minor in TESOL is designed for students in various fields, who wish to acquire professional knowledge related to teaching English to speakers of other languages. Students will gain skills in cross-cultural competence, understand and implement more equitable and effective ways of working with multilingual learners, and become familiar with the processes of first and second language acquisition. Students will acquire a foundational knowledge of effective teaching practices to assist and assess multilingual learners. The TESOL minor requires a minimum of 19 credit hours; 16 credits are required core courses and 3 credits are electives selected in consultation with a program adviser.

Non-Licensure TESOL Minor


The non-licensure minor program in TESOL is designed for students in various fields, who wish to acquire professional knowledge related to teaching English to speakers of other languages, but who do not want to pursue Virginia teaching licensure. Students will acquire skills in cross-cultural competence, understand and implement more equitable and effective ways of working with English learners (ELs), and become familiar with the processes of first and second language acquisition. Students will gain a foundational knowledge of effective teaching practices to assist and assess ELs. The TESOL non-licensure minor requires a minimum of 19-20 credit hours; 16 credits are required core courses and 3-4 credits are electives selected in consultation with a program adviser.
