Required Courses

1 The General Education  program contains a set of requirements each student must fulfill. The number of credit hours necessary to fulfill these requirements may vary.

2 Some major core courses simultaneously satisfy degree and some General Education  requirements so that a student need not take more than 120 credit hours to satisfy graduation requirements.

Major Core Requirements

Multidisciplinary Concentration

The multidisciplinary concentration is designed to provide a solid foundation in physics for students whose interests extend beyond traditional physics fields. The track of secondary education opens doors to the pursuit of graduate degrees in education and other career paths requiring a technical background.

The following are also required for all tracks in the multidisciplinary concentration:

Two credits from the following: 2 Credit Hours

1 Students completing honors theses should take PHYS 499  in both the fall and spring semesters of their senior year for a total of 6 credit hours.

Secondary Education Track

The Secondary Education Track provides the student with the background to achieve certification as a teacher in Virginia Public Schools.  Aside from the courses listed below, necessary to earn a Bachelor of Science in Physics, the student will need to enroll in the Master of Arts in Education to complete all of the coursework required for certification.  For further information, contact Dr. Scott Paulson of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Students must be fully admitted into pre-professional teacher education prior to enrolling in these courses:

Additional Information

In addition to the above requirements, students must declare a minor in Secondary Education and complete those requirements.

Beyond the General Education , academic major, and secondary education minor requirements, physics majors desiring secondary education teacher licensure must be admitted to teacher education, complete the pre-professional program in secondary education at the undergraduate level and complete the graduate level Master of Arts in Teaching degree.

It is critical that students seeking licensure consult regularly with both their education adviser and their major adviser to support their progression through the programs.  For a full description of the program in secondary teaching, refer to the Department of Middle, Secondary and Mathematics Education, in addition to the College of Education  section of the catalog.

Third and Fourth Years

During their junior and senior years, students will select courses to complete the specific program concentration which they are following. These course selections will be made with the assistance of a faculty adviser.
