This course will examine cellular mechanisms, genetics and environmental factors that underlie the onset and progression of age-related neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This course will build on students’ foundational knowledge of cell function, apoptosis and genetics to understand mechanisms that initiate and drive the proliferation neuronal cell death in age-related neurodegenerative diseases. In this course, students also study advancements in research and technology that have led to improved diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative disease.
