Survey of the origin and development of rhetorical theory as a product of the classical Mediterranean world, tracing its development through the Enlightenment in Europe. Major periods and thinkers will be studied with the goal of contextualizing theories that still heavily influence writing and technical communication practices today. Includes an emphasis on critical thought as a precursor to rhetorical praxis and how the classical past can inform modern authorship.
