The Office of Equal Opportunity administers JMU's commitment to promoting equal opportunity, compliance, and adherence to relevant federal and state laws for the entire JMU community. JMU adheres to a strict policy that prohibits discrimination of any kind in JMU's hiring practices, admissions, academics or programs involving JMU employees or students. The Office of Equal Opportunity is a resource available to all university community members seeking guidance regarding the protections and rights provided in JMU Policies 1302 and 1324 and under state and federal law. JMU policy 1302 is the university's nondiscrimination policy and policy 1324 outlines the procedures for adjudication of allegations of protected characteristic discrimination, harassment and retaliation.

The responsibility for overall coordination, monitoring and information dissemination about JMU's program of equal opportunity, non-discrimination and work force analysis is assigned to the Office of Equal Opportunity. The OEO also monitors JMU's compliance with applicable federal and state laws assigned to the department.

Any university community member who believes they have been subjected to discrimination, harassment or retaliation due to age, color, disability, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information (including family medical history), marital status, military status (including veteran status), national origin (including ethnicity), parental status, political affiliation, pregnancy (including childbirth or related medical conditions), race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or on any basis protected by law, unless otherwise permitted or required by law may file a complaint with the OEO. The OEO investigates complaints of discrimination, harassment and retaliation on the basis of these protected characteristics. The OEO provides consultation to assist individuals as they explore available options and resources related to non-discrimination policies at JMU.
