Russian, Eurasian and Slavic Studies Minor Website

This minor offers students a broad, cross disciplinary perspective on Russian culture, history, political institutions, economy and geography. It deepens the students' understanding and knowledge of the Russian and non-Russian peoples of the former Soviet Union, and prepares them for careers in teaching, government and international business.

Minor Requirements

This minor requires 18 credits with a minimum of six credits of Russian language. Students must take courses in at least three different disciplines.

Special topics courses in any discipline can be applied to the minor with the approval of the minor coordinator. Students may also earn credit by participating in a study abroad program in Eastern Europe (including Russia), the Caucasus, or Central Asia.

Students who have proficiency in a language of the region not taught at JMU may satisfy the RUS language requirement by taking the AVANT Stamp assessment and demonstrating proficiency at the Advanced Low level. Other certifications of Advanced Low level proficiency include the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview, a 5 on the AP exam, an IB level of 6 or above, or a secondary school transcript where the target language was used for instruction.
