Program Description
The Pre-Medicine program provides guidance on courses, experiential activities, and competencies for students that are preparing to be competitive applicants to Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.), Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.), and Doctor of Naturapathic Medicine (N.D.) programs after completing their bachelor's degree at James Madison University. The Pre-Med program is a minor that students complete as part of their baccalaureate degree.
Declaring Pre-Medicine (Admission Standards)
Incoming first-year and transfer students can declare pre-medicine without verification from PPH Advising. Current students can request to declare the pre-medicine minor through MyMadison but will need approval for the request to be granted. If the student has completed fewer than 13 hours of biology, chemistry, physics and math (BCPM) credits, the request will be granted after verification of course work. If the student has completed 13 hours or more BCPM credits, the request will be granted if the BCPM GPA is 3.00 or greater.
Access to Pre-Medicine Advising (Progression Standards)
After completing 13 credits of biology, chemistry, physics and math (BCPM), pre-medicine students undergo academic reviews twice a year. Students who maintain a 3.00 BCPM GPA are invited to participate in advising activities including career exploration, experiential planning and application preparation.
Pre-medicine students whose BCPM GPA falls below 3.00 are at high risk of not being admitted to medical school and will receive targeted advising focused on academic improvement and career exploration. If a student falls below the standard in a subsequent performance review, the pre-medicine minor will be administratively dropped. Students may re-enter the minor upon meeting the 3.00 BCPM GPA requirement.

Pre-professional health programs do not ensure that all prerequisites for admission to health professions schools are met. Students should inquire with medical schools of interest to confirm details of admission requirements.
