Health Services Administration, B.S.


Program Description


The program in health services administration prepares students for entry-level administrative positions and staff positions requiring administrative skills in various health organizations including hospitals, hospital systems, managed care organizations, retirement and long-term care facilities, ambulatory care organizations, physician practices and public health facilities. In addition, the program provides the foundation for graduate study in health administration and related fields. The health services administration program is approved as a Full Certified undergraduate program by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA).

Admission Requirements and Minimum Grades


Any student admitted to JMU can declare Health Services Administration as their major and enroll in prerequisite courses. However, to progress in the major beyond the prerequisite courses, students must apply and be admitted to the program.

Students wishing to be admitted to the health services administration program at JMU may apply in the spring of their sophomore year or upon completion of the prerequisite courses. To be eligible to apply, students must 

  1. have completed or be enrolled in the prerequisite courses listed below at the time of application and receive a minimum grade of “C-“.
  2. submit a personal statement addressing
    • the student’s understanding of the profession of health administration
    • volunteer or other practical experience in health care (if applicable; not required)
    • personal goals for a career in health services administration.

Applications are due September 15 for spring semester admission or February 15 for fall semester admission. Specific application requirements may be found on the health services administration program website (http://healthprof.jmu.edu/hsa/).

1 The General Education  program contains a set of requirements each student must fulfill. Some credits may be fulfilled by courses required within the major.
2 Students automatically meet the B.S. quantitative and scientific literacy requirements by completing the major requirements. No more than 30 hours may be taken in the College of Business .
