Mission

The Department of Kinesiology is dedicated to the development of future leaders in professions that maximize the potential of individuals and society through physical activity.

Goals

The department is committed to providing:

  • Quality graduate programs that complement the undergraduate programs and provide qualified students with an opportunity for advanced study in the disciplines of kinesiology.
  • Service to JMU, the professions and local community through our unique knowledge and expertise.
  • Research and development projects that push back the boundaries of knowledge and promote effective practice in the kinesiology disciplines.

We are dedicated to appreciating differences in perspective, identity, and experience through cultivating class environments, curriculum, and pre-professional opportunities that align with the spirit of inclusion.  This mission ultimately gets us closer to our vision of high-quality education.

The Department of Kinesiology offers a Master of Science degree with a focus on exercise physiology that includes both a thesis and non-thesis track. The department also offers a five-year program leading to a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) designed for initial licensure to teach physical and health education.

Overview of Programs

The Department of Kinesiology is home to two graduate programs. Refer to the specific program for admission criteria and deadlines.

Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology Concentration, M.S.  

  • Students may choose from a thesis or non-thesis track
  • Electives are selected with approval of the advisor in accordance with the professional goals of the student

Education, PHETE (Physical & Health Education Teacher Education) Concentration, M.A.T.  

  • This is a 5-year undergraduate to graduate program leading to a designed for initial licensure to teach physical and health education.
