This course introduces the fundamental and governing principles of systems of forces acting on rigid bodies, beams and columns; and the analysis of truss, frame and machine structures. Topics include external and internal equilibrium of rigid bodies; systems of force and moment vectors; centroids; friction; loading that results in uniaxial, shear, flexure, and torsion stresses and strains; buckling; and strength of materials. An included laboratory component provides reinforcement of course material through experiments. Prerequisite(s): MATH 236 and PHYS 240 ; and minimum grade of “C-” in ENGR 112 .
