HIST 384. United Kingdom in Modern History

A survey of Great Britain/United Kingdom from the 1688 Glorious Revolution through its rise to the dominant world power through the Industrial Revolution and colonial expansion controlling nearly ¼ of the world’s land and population, to two world wars and its relegation to second-class status, to the eventual joining of the European Union and subsequent withdrawal. Emphasis is placed on social, economic and military history.

Students will learn the important contributions to the history of democracy and parliamentary government over 350 years, as well as the economic and industrial contributions. There will be a focus on the inordinate contributions to the world in both social and technological developments in the 20th and 21st centuries.
