This course introduces freshman and transfer nursing majors to the nursing curriculum and electives in other disciplines that relate to the goals and objectives of the program. This course will include instruction on campus student resources, time management and study skills, development of a clear academic plan, and nursing career options.

This course will explore the state of mental and behavioral health of children and adolescents. It will examine the neuropathophysiological nature of mental and behavioral illnesses, health promotion, and care of children and adolescents.

This course will examine the current evidence and issues related to obesity in children and adolescents in the United States. Emphasis is placed on the health-related outcomes of childhood obesity for individuals, families and communities. Analysis of individual and public health approaches to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity will be discussed.

This course examines concepts of cultural awareness and culturally competent care with individuals, families and communities. The influence of cultural beliefs and practices on health care that are specific to identified cultures is emphasized.

This elective course explores traumatic events and the ongoing psychological and social stress responses that result. Empowerment and resilience conceptual premises will be examined as elements to overcoming trauma and/or traumatic events. Historical traumatic community events will be used to highlight strategies of recognition and resilience and provide a micro to macro level perspective.

This course explores adult health alterations that develop as a result of a trauma. Students will apply the nursing process to analyze psychological, physical, social and secondary stress as a result of trauma care situations. Students will analyze a plan of care that engages an interdisciplinary team approach to the care process. Students will develop an understanding of the rehabilitation process and long term outcomes of the traumatically injured.

This course open to all students from all majors, is an examination of pain, its impact on people, causes, treatments and the role of health professionals. Emphasis is placed on understanding how people experience pain and its effect on quality of life.

Students study, observe and participate in interprofessional assessment, planning and delivery of community-based primary health care in partnership with residents and agencies of a host rural county. Learning activities will emphasize rural culture, rural health care and interprofessional practice.

An elective nursing course that explores fundamental aspects of nursing history including pertinent nursing founders and leaders as well as examination of the many influences that have shaped the nursing profession. Review of nursing within its historical context provides an opportunity to consider changes for the future.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs/ a.k.a. chronic illnesses) are universal. The course provides students with an introduction to global health care systems models, and concepts and their influence on health disparities and delivery of healthcare, focusing on NCDs. Additionally, students will examine ways that nurses and nursing can meet the challenges of addressing NCDs at a global level.

This course examines how illness affects sexuality (physiologically, psychologically and culturally) across the lifespan. Sources of interventions and support for issues of sexuality and chronic illness will be addressed.

This course is based on the accepted philosophy and practice of Faith Community Nursing and examines the roots of health and healing found in many religious traditions. Critical thinking strategies, such as Socratic questioning, are used to analyze the spiritual dimension of health and healing for the practitioner as well as clients they serve. This course examines the principles, practices, and outcomes of complementary therapies and alternative healing that are widely used in the general population. The integration of alternative and conventional health practices will be examined. Ethical, legal and professional issues will be explored.

This course is designed to provide strategies for academic success in an online learning environment for students in the R.N. to B.S.N. program. Students apply concepts of scholarly writing and identify research. An emphasis is placed on competence with technology and working collaboratively within an online environment.

This online course examines evidence-based knowledge needed to provide holistic care for an aging population. Issues related to legal and ethical aspects of care, health promotion, chronic health conditions and special issues related to gerontological nursing care are examined.

Open to students from any major. Students gain insight into the lives of children and young adults with disabilities, discuss how having dependents with disabilities affects the entire family, and provide care for children/young adults with disabilities. Disabling conditions will be investigated. Learning activities include service learning through caring for a child/young adult with disabilities, guest speakers and discussion. Students must provide their own transportation to service-learning sites off campus.

This course focuses on preparing the student to give patient-centered end-of-life care. Using a variety of learning methods, the student will examine theories and care models, and will discuss current topics surrounding death and dying, including social, cultural, ethical, spiritual and legal issues.

The student will develop a basic understanding of the current practices related to diabetes care and the impact of a diabetes diagnosis on the individual, family and community. In this course, pre-professional health, pre-nursing and engineering students will work in interprofessional teams to develop and communicate solutions to a community health challenge. Students will use innovative MakerSpace technologies to produce a tangible product aimed at improving the challenge while also exploring technology's potential to cause harm. In this course students from nursing and other health-related majors will explore the health needs and the health and human services delivery system in Costa Rica, as well as the history and culture of this Central American country. Students will examine issues that impact health in the United States and Costa Rica and the roles of health care professionals in the delivery of healthcare. This immersion experience includes home stay with a host family and Spanish language study.

In this course students will explore the health care system of Tarragona, Spain, through a partnership with the faculty of nursing at Universitat Rovira I Virgili. Through an international lens, students will learn about the Spanish nursing profession and related health fields, as well as the unique history, language and culture of this Catalonian region of Spain. Students will explore the ways that Spanish health professionals address health needs in both acute and community care settings in the context of the national health system, and they will compare and contrast this with their knowledge of the U.S. health system approach. This course will explore core concepts of chronic illness across the lifespan from an interdisciplinary perspective. Epidemiology, economics, ethics, culture, family and policy will be emphasized. These topics and concepts will be related to model(s) of chronic care.

Health care ethics is a shared, relevant concern among health and human service disciplines and is an ideal vehicle for students form different fields to learn about one another's disciplines and to participate in interprofessional team analysis, discussion, and problem-solving. A major theme is the use of information systems and technologies to improve the quality and safety of patient care in a changing health care environment. Building upon the knowledge of pharmacology learned at the undergraduate level, this course examines concepts in pharmacotherapeutics necessary for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) and Clinical Nurse Leaders (CNL) practice. Aspects of leadership in relation to the utilization of current research-based information to plan for the design, implementation and evaluation of client-centered care will be examined.

This course prepares advanced nursing students to integrate theories and principles of teaching and learning into clinical education settings. Emphasis is placed on designing and evaluating evidence-based, person-centered educational strategies for patients, families and the interdisciplinary healthcare team that promote quality, safety and equity in health care. Students will apply instructional technologies, develop interprofessional educational plans and assess outcomes of hypothetical interventions to enhance system improvement. Learners will cultivate their professional identity as nurse educators and collaborative healthcare leaders.

This course provides a synthesis of concepts used for effective performance of the nurse administrator's role in organizations. The use of human and financial resources is examined within an organizational framework and the strategic management of organizational goals, culture and diversity is highlighted.

Students gain knowledge about informatics and health care technology skills that support complex organizational processes. The impact of informatics and health care technology on patient safety, quality and organizational outcomes is emphasized.

This course focuses on nursing and healthcare informatics and their technological applications in healthcare. Specifically, it will emphasize using technology with an interprofessional team to improve patient care and safety. This course will demonstrate effective approaches to health care delivery using health information technology. The framework for this course utilizes a nursing informatics model that is comprised of three core domains: point-of-care technology, data management and analytics, and patient safety and quality. Students will develop their nursing informatics knowledge and skills through reading, discussions, case studies, exploration and utilization of electronic modalities. While targeted primarily for the nursing arena, this course is also of value in most health-related professions and disciplines.

Terminology, tools and methods of financial management in healthcare organizations and systems are examined. Concepts critical to making sound business and financial decisions in an ever-changing healthcare economic climate are explored.

This course will explore global health care systems. Graduate students will examine interprofessional leadership characteristics and how they address health needs across settings. Students will explore physical and social environments to understand individual, societal and population-based influences on health and well-being.

This course will explore the professional responsibilities of the Doctor of Nursing Practice prepared nurse leader and the translation of scholarship into practice. Students will acquire necessary competencies through the examination of current translational science literature and its impact on patient care outcomes.

This course will explore nursing leadership in executive practice with an emphasis on delivery of safe, timely, efficient, equitable and patient-centered care. Students will be introduced to essential core competencies surrounding leadership, professionalism, business skills, knowledge of healthcare environment, and communication and relationship management to increase proficiency for working in complex healthcare systems as nursing leaders.

Values and ethics in health and health care, with particular attention to population health, health policy and the politics of health care are explored. Ethical issues in health and social services that challenge values are examined in the context of personal and organizational beliefs. Course content includes, but is not limited to, reproductive issues, emerging diseases, product liability, pharmaceutical controls, advertising, occupational and environmental issues, and research dilemmas.

This interprofessional course prepares graduate students to develop policy analyses in multiple arenas. Taking the concept that "all policy is health policy," students will read and evaluate public, institutional, and health and health care policies. Population health effects and unintended consequences of policy will be examined. Various policy analysis formats will be explored, and students will develop preferences for type and style for differing audiences. Students will gain practice writing policy analyses and making recommendations for feasible policy change. Finally, students will participate in extensive peer review with an eye toward eventual publication.

This course will explore global healthcare systems. Graduate students will examine health needs across settings and have practicum experiences. Students will explore physical, political, historical, economic, cultural and social environments to understand individual, societal and population-based influences on health and well-being. This course focuses on the distribution of health-related conditions within human populations and factors influencing their distribution. Emphasis is on measurement of the health of populations, the natural history of diseases, study design, and assessment of data sources within the context of interprofessional practice. It addresses health systems that focus on health promotion and disease prevention.

Health policymaking and evidence-based policy advocacy are explored and applied. Policy analysis for interprofessional practitioners in leadership roles is emphasized. The public policy process and mechanisms for change are applied to improve patient safety, health and quality outcomes.

Students gain advanced knowledge of economics and economic tools that are central to health policy development, implementation and analysis. Theoretical and conceptual aspects of national and global healthcare economics are explored. Students develop analytical skills necessary to evaluate and influence health policy.

This course will explore the nurse as an educator. Principles of teaching and learning will be investigated, developed and implemented with an emphasis on the academic environment. This course will address the transition from practice to academia with a focus on faculty roles, curricular design and university systems governing faculty.

This course will explore health care applications of problem understanding, idea generation and decision-making. Nursing and other histories will contextualize the complexities of achieving outcomes for modern health care delivery. Learners will bring their experiences as leaders to evaluate related concepts and frameworks such as ethical reasoning, decision-making science and innovative methods for their applicability to current and potential challenges in healthcare. Learners will develop skills to cultivate solution ecosystems such as candor, creativity, cognitive flexibility and relationship building among professions and diverse groups.

Emphasis on the application of skills, theories, concepts, issues and research findings to the clinical care of selected populations in age ranges appropriate for the selected track. Clinical competency for a specific population is emphasized. This course will use clinical preceptors as well as faculty.

This course prepares doctoral level practitioners with skills and competencies needed to assimilate knowledge at a high level of complexity focusing upon clinical scholarship in nursing. Students will focus on quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods to critically appraise available data and research to achieve a better understanding of clinical decision-making and evidence-based practice.

This course explores methods used in advanced nursing scholarship. Students will learn to apply statistical methods and models to practice. Informatics inquiry tools will be used to generate practice scholarship insights.

Health is imperative for quality of life and for economic vitality. This course explores theory development regarding health behavior and strategies for interventions with individuals and populations. Program development, implementation, evaluation and initiatives to reduce risk and improve health status are explored. Evidence based practice to improve clinical preventive services is examined.

This course provides an overview of quality improvement (QI) in health care and public health settings. Students will build knowledge of implementation science (IS) theories, frameworks and models as they design a QI project. The cornerstones of QI are identifying and using data to prioritize opportunity and measure impact, setting goals based on evidence/best practice, and creating changes that result in improved care or service that are sustainable over time. This course will provide an overview of the theoretical and conceptual background needed to develop the systems thinking skills necessary for effective QI. Assignments will focus on the practical applications of QI tools and techniques in health care and public health settings, including the skills needed to design and manage QI projects. The course will also include a focus on measurement and analysis techniques and strategies to sustain and spread improvements. Throughout the course, students will be challenged to look at the world through the QI lens and find ways to make innovative and effective changes that improve health and how we provide care.

This is a supplemental practicum course designed to help students build and assimilate knowledge for advanced specialty practice at a high level of complexity. This practicum has a practice emphasis.

Health policymaking and evidence-based policy advocacy are cultivated as students engage with partner organizations. Students will work directly with a health policy advocacy organization to further the organization's policy agenda during this immersive experience. This course may be repeated for a total of three credits.

This is a practical course for graduate students in the sciences. Students will practice organizing their work for logical flow, and writing with clarity and simplicity for publication. Students will review and critique papers, revising their own writing samples (or samples provided) for eventual publication. On completion, students will have gained confidence with science writing and a working knowledge of the publication process.

The course prepares the student for scholarly writing. It emphasizes key elements of scholarly writing, authorship principles and identification of ethical considerations.

The final version of the scholarly document is submitted to the Graduate School. The final presentation of the scholarly project is publicly disseminated.
