MUI 231  Legal Aspects of Music Industry  
Credits 3   Grading Basis Graded  
An examination of the legal issues affecting the performing arts, recording and music publishing fields. Topics include music rights and licensing, Performing arts unions and guilds, artist representation and contractual relationships.
Prerequisites: MUI 221 and music major, or instructor permission.
MUI 315  Songwriting  
Credits 3   Grading Basis Graded  
An introduction to form, lyric development and melodic structure of contemporary songwriting for commercial entertainment applications. The course will include examination of leadsheet writing, demo production, copyright protection and publishing of commercial songs.
Prerequisites: Music majors /minors: MUI 230 and MUI 231; or permission of the instructor. Music industry minors: MUI 230 and MUI 231 and MUS 140; or permission of the instructor.
MUI 324  Introduction to Audio Devices  
Credits 3   Grading Basis Graded  
Introduction to electronic and digital devices utilized in the sound recording industry.
Prerequisites: PHYS 121, MUI 230 and MUI 231; or permission of the instructor.
MUI 330  Music Publishing  
Credits 3   Grading Basis Graded  
This course will offer a comprehensive overview of the music publication industry. The focus will be on, but not limited to, mainstream popular music. It will also consider songwriter/publisher relations, self-publication, as well as an examination of art, religious and educational music publishing.
Prerequisites: MUI 230 and MUI 231; or permission of the instructor.
MUI 400  Pro Tools: Multitrack Recording and Music Production  
Credits 3   Grading Basis Graded  
An introduction to contemporary multi-track recording studio techniques utilizing Pro Tools. Students will be introduced to recording studio design, psycho-acoustics, miking techniques, Musical Instrument Digital Interface and the mixing console.
Prerequisites: MUI 230, MUI 231 and MUI 324; or permission of the instructor.
MUI 405  Logic Pro: Synthesis and Sound Design  
Credits 3   Grading Basis Graded  
An introduction to analog synthesis, digital synthesis, an overview of conditions and events that led to the development of MIDI, a study of the MIDI protocol itself, as well as Apple Certified instruction in music production utilizing Logic Pro.

MUI 411  Audio Postproduction  
Credits 3   Grading Basis Graded  
An examination of music and sound used in the broadcast and entertainment media from an intensive, hands-on engineering perspective. The course will feature multiple post-production assignments to be completed in our on-campus Studio B, as well as field trips to off-campus post-production studios.
Prerequisites: MUI 230, MUI 324, and MUI 400; or instructor permission.
MUI 415  Songwriting II  
Credits 3   Grading Basis Graded  
This course is a continuation in the study of form, lyric development and melodic structure of contemporary songwriting for commercial entertainment applications. This course will also take into account some basic music business aspects important in the music industry directly related to song writers.
Prerequisites: Music majors /minors: MUI 230 and MUI 231; or permission of the instructor. Music industry minors: MUI 230 and MUI 231 and MUS 140; or permission of the instructor.
MUI 422  Concert Production and Promotion  
Credits 3   Grading Basis Graded  
Study of the presentation of cultural and commercial entertainment in the form of concert events from artistic, technical and business viewpoints. The roles of the cultural impresario and concert promoter in contemporary society are examined.
Prerequisites: MUI 230 and MUI 231; or permission of the instructor.
MUI 423  Sound Reinforcement  
Credits 3   Grading Basis Graded  
An introduction to the history, equipment, skills and business of sound reinforcement. The technique of contemporary sound engineers are examined and experienced by the use of audio amplification systems to design and use for public address and musical performance.
Prerequisites: MUI 230, MUI 231 and MUI 324; or permission of the instructor. MUI 400 is recommended.
MUI 430  Artist Management  
Credits 3   Grading Basis Graded  
This course will evaluate the function of musician/recording artist representatives in the music industry. Focus of discussions will include artist development from early career stages to concert tours, unions, recording companies, personal appearances, contractual agreements, etc.

MUI 435  Marketing in Music Production  
Credits 3   Grading Basis Graded  
Examination of the process of studio production, manufacturing, promotion and distribution of contemporary recordings. Record release programs for independent and major label-controlled products are analyzed.

MUI 440  Entrepreneurship in Music Industry  
Credits 3   Grading Basis Graded  
The study of business aspects of the music industry managing, marketing, finance and sales. Students develop a comprehensive music business plan. Fulfills the College of Arts and Letters writing-intensive requirement for the major.

MUI 492  Internship in Music Industry  
Credits 3-6   Grading Basis Graded  
A supervised off-campus cocurricular learning activity designed to provide practical experience in the music industry.
