This course is designed to help the student explore and understand the physiological changes that occur during an acute bout of exercise and as a result of chronic physical training. Students will study the role various (e.g. cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, neuro-endocrine, and renal etc.) systems play in maintaining homeostasis during physical activity. In addition, the physiology of physical performance under a range of environmental conditions will also be examined.

Theories, principles and procedures involved with leading group fitness classes. Students will gain knowledge and experience in class design and choreography development. Programming for children, older adults, pregnancy and aquatic exercise will be included. Practical and written assessments will occur throughout the semester. Participation in group exercise classes is a requirement. Students will have the opportunity to enroll in the AFAA Primary Group Exercise Certification.

This course provides students with the knowledge and skills required for administering and evaluating aspects of physical fitness (e.g., cardiorespiratory, muscular, flexibility, body composition) and quality of life. Additionally, this course prepares students with the knowledge and skills required for developing and implementing a comprehensive and effective exercise prescription, including goal setting and methods to obtain goals.

KIN 639  Advanced Exercise Assessment and Electrocardiography

This course helps students develop expertise in administering and interpreting 12-lead and single-lead electrocardiograms (ECG) at rest and during exercise. The course helps students develop proficiency in various exercise testing protocols, along with a comprehensive understanding of normal and abnormal physiological responses to exercise across diverse clinical conditions (e.g., cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic pathologies).

KIN 640  Exercise Management in Chronic Disease

This course studies the benefits, risks and strategies for exercise testing and programming for persons with respiratory, neuromuscular, skeletal and immunological diseases, as well as psychological disorders. Prevalence, economic ramifications, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, assessment, pharmacology, potential benefits, and risk of exercise and exercise programming strategies are emphasized.

KIN 644  Cardiorespiratory Exercise Physiology

This is an advanced course in exercise physiology that provides an in-depth analysis of the cardiopulmonary system and acute responses to exercise. This course will cover the basic anatomy and physiology of the cardiopulmonary system. Emphasis will be placed on principles of ventilation, diffusion, blood flow, ventilation-perfusion relationships between the pulmonary and cardiovascular systems, gas transport by the blood, mechanics of breathing, and control of ventilation. The course will focus on how these key principles are impacted by acute exercise as well as the adaptations that occur in response to exercise training.

This is an advanced course in exercise physiology that examines the acute responses and chronic adaptations of metabolic systems with exercise. This course will examine topics including the biochemistry of energy supply, metabolic responses to exercise and adaptations to training and how various factors (such as nutrition) can influence these responses/adaptations. Emphasis will be placed on the mechanisms underlying metabolic responses/adaptations to exercise and on the metabolic determinants of human physical performance.

Skill in the initiation, conduct and interpretation of research.
