ARTH 471. Commemoration and Controversy: Public Art in America

This course examines the socio-historical, political, cultural and philosophical dimensions of public art in American society, from the Early Republic to the present day. Topics may include: the nature of public art, its uses and functions, as well as civic and official attitudes towards art in the public sphere. Issues of censorship, propaganda, and the “culture wars” of the 1980s and 90s will be highlighted. Prerequisite: ARTH 206.
